Dhaka, January 4 – The group Students Against Discrimination (SAD) has called for the immediate and unqualified release of its member secretary from the Habiganj branch, Mahdi Hasan, by nightfall, as well as the removal of the police station’s officer-in-charge (OC).
A Facebook update posted approximately at 12:30 am outlined two requirements, one being the President issuing an order within the following 24 hours that provides protection from legal consequences for students, employees, and citizens involved in the large-scale protests in July for all actions taken between July 1 and August 8.
On Saturday night earlier, Mahdi Hasan was taken into custody by the Habiganj Detective Branch (DB) police.
Leaders and activists of SAD stated that Mahdi was arrested at a house located in the Shayestanagar neighborhood of the city and transported to Habiganj Sadar Police Station via a mini bus.
Verifying the arrest, Habiganj Police Superintendent Yasmin Akter stated that Mahdi Hasan was taken into custody, mentioning that information about the reasons for the detention will be provided at a later time.
After being arrested, leaders and members of SAD assembled outside the police station, calling for his prompt release and shouting protest chants.
An online clip from the event eventually became popular on Facebook, capturing Mahdi expressing contentious statements directed at the OC, which led to extensive backlash.
In the popular video, Mahdi is shown speaking to the OC, stating: "We destroyed the Baniachong police station and lit SI Santosh on fire. From such a stance, how can you claim, 'What difference does it make if he is an SAD supporter?' Were so many of our comrades not here for no reason? During the July protest, we established the government. With this background, you belong to our leadership. However, you have detained our individuals."
Following mediation from Assistant Superintendent of Police (Habiganj Sadar Division) Shahidul Islam, Nayan was freed at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
Mahdi Hasan eventually admitted to getting the show-cause letter, stating that his comments were a "momentary mistake."
Former OC Abul Kalam stated that Nayan was arrested based on suspicions connected to an anti-discrimination protest and accused of having ties with the Chhatra League, but was later freed once investigations confirmed no criminal activity.
