A young person held grand aspirations for his 1980s Ford Ranger vehicle, yet struggled to get assistance. Therefore, he repaired the truck on his own, starting a long-term profession in mechanics.
Currently, the 53-year-old owns and operates his own business, NEK Collision, located in Lyndonville, Vermont.

Avoid: Audi A4
Ling cautions that the advanced technology in the German midsize sedan might lead to electrical issues, resulting in a dashboard filled with confusing alert indicators.
Indeed, he thinks this model reflects a larger problem affecting European luxury brands.
Every European luxury vehicle pushes its technological innovations onto the market prematurely," he states. "They begin experiencing unexpected computer, module, or sensor malfunctions.
He forecasts that these vehicles will encounter such malfunctions within four to six years.
The A4 model begins at a price of $42,000, and Ling notes that it is a top-notch vehicle for driving.
Nevertheless, he cautions that the expensive wheel bearings and suspension parts, which ensure a comfortable ride, can be pricey to repair.
They operate very well," he said. "However, if you're looking for something that won't require much maintenance, I'd recommend staying away from it.
Avoid: Volkswagen Jetta
The Jetta is the more budget-friendly German relative of the A4, yet, as Ling points out, it does not perform significantly better over time.
Priced from $21,995, it stands among the most affordable new sedans available.
Initially, the Jetta operates smoothly, but after reaching 80,000 miles, Ling mentions that the good times have ended. Costly maintenance issues accumulate, leading owners to doubt their monetary decisions.
"Then, they begin to turn highly untrustworthy," he remarked.
The Jetta faces identical component availability problems as its more upscale sibling.
Since Volkswagen employs components that are not as readily accessible in the U.S., Ling notes, replacing parts in a Jetta can incur costs "30 to 60 percent" higher compared to other vehicles.
Avoid: Ford F-150
The F-150 remains the top-selling pickup in America, with Ling noting that its lasting reliability justifies the cost.
However, the popular truck has a significant drawback, according to him: its construction materials.
In an effort to reduce weight, Ford utilizes aluminum molds for the truck’s frame, whereas rivals like the Chevy Silverado, Ram models, and Toyota Tundra use high-strength steel instead.
This design decision enhances the fuel efficiency of the F-150, yet Ling cautions that aluminum behaves differently compared to steel when it comes to crumpling. Additionally, this affects repair processes, making them more complex and costly.
This has not prevented Ford from continuing to lead in the truck industry.
The firm transported an impressive total of 732,139 F-Series vehicles during 2024. The Silverado ranked as the runner-up with sales reaching 542,517 units.
Ling does not dispute the F-150's dependability, yet regarding tough endurance, he believes consumers may find more suitable options elsewhere.
The base price of the F-150 begins at $38,810, though higher-end models like the Performance and Platinum versions can exceed $80,000.
Purchase: high-end Toyota Camry (particularly the hybrid model)
According to Ling, the Japanese company Toyota produces the most dependable, durable, and economically viable vehicles for long-term use.
If dependability is your priority, he thinks drivers won’t be disappointed with a Toyota Camry—particularly if you’re prepared to invest in a more premium version.
"If you purchase an entry-level Toyota Camry, it lacks the same level of insulation and isn't as silent," he cautioned.
In contrast with its German counterparts, Toyota's production system enables its components to be already circulating within automotive distribution channels.
Since Japanese automakers do not completely redesign components for each vehicle, they can use comparable parts across different models. Ling notes that this contributes to lower repair costs for Japanese vehicles compared to other brands.
He similarly favors Toyota's quality of construction compared to other top-selling vehicles.
"Usually, the distinction between Toyota and Honda lies in the durability of the interior trim," he stated.
From a mechanical standpoint, both models are highly dependable. However, Toyota offers slightly superior craftsmanship in their interior components and tends to maintain its condition longer.
Ling notes that the Camry's hybrid system—integrating an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, found in every 2025 Camry—offers an additional advantage for rear-seat occupants.
A 1000-pound battery installed beneath the seat unintentionally serves as an insulator, minimizing outside traffic sounds, even at high-speed driving conditions.
"When you're in the rear seat, you're positioned above the large battery," he mentioned.
That alone is an acoustically dampening component within the vehicle.
The base version of the Camry begins at $28,700. High-end trims can cost buyers approximately $35,000.
Buy: Ram 1500
Ling has been driving a Ram pickup for many years, and his long-term use of the standard-duty vehicle highlights the brand's exceptional craftsmanship.
Although Ram (previously part of the Dodge brand) has encountered strong sales rivalry from Ford and Chevrolet, the 1500 remains Ling's preferred choice for durability.
He stated, 'Dodge produces many highly dependable cars.'" or "According to him, Dodge offers a wide range of very trustworthy vehicles." or "Dodge has numerous extremely reliable automobiles," he mentioned. or "He remarked, 'Dodge manufactures several truly durable vehicles.'" or "They noted, 'Dodge creates a variety of well-relied-upon cars.'
Nevertheless, he highlights an important limitation within the U.S. truck market: the growingly intricate component distribution network.
In contrast to their Japanese equivalents, American companies have established a strong dependence on external vendors for essential parts, which typically leads to higher maintenance expenses for customers.
That probably hasn’t been improved by Ram’s latest efforts to reintroduce its bigger, heavier V8 Hemi engine .
"If you're looking for a highly economical vehicle to maintain, American trucks aren't the choice," Ling remarked.

The South Korean car manufacturer's budget-friendly K4 offers one of the strongest cost-effective options available in the current sedan industry.
"Since 2010, Kia and Hyundai have significantly improved, producing some of the most dependable vehicles available," he said.
The mechanic's approval goes beyond mere professional assessment—it's deeply personal. Ling uses his 2016 Kia Optima as his everyday vehicle, which has surpassed 100,000 miles with minimal upkeep required.
This credibility story is also supported by Kia’s top-tier powertrain warranty, offering coverage for essential engine parts over 10 years or 100,000 miles — an assurance that has enabled the former budget brand to become a serious player in the car market.
"My Optima has proven to be a great and dependable vehicle," Ling stated.
The cost of the K4 begins at $21,990 and can go beyond $29,000.
